Hello friends!

How are you guys? Today I’m sharing a special post that is sort of different from how I normally go about posting. I’m giving you a random life update and sharing with you about what has currently been consuming so much of my time lately…my new puppy!

You may have noticed that for the past few months I have only been posting once a week on this blog. My apologies if this is throwing you off! I have been striving to post twice a week, but with grad school and now caring for our little nugget, it’s been hard to keep up with the usual schedule! I’ve been trying my best to savor this time with our pup because he is growing fast. Before I know it, the puppy days will be gone!

If you’ve been following me on Instagram and Snapchat you’ve already seen lots of pictures and videos, but those of you who haven’t…meet our sweet baby Shadow!

……Yeah, I’m pretty much a crazy dog mom now!!! LOL 😉

He is a pure bred golden retriever, born on December 1st! When we first brought Shadow home at the end of January, he was only 9 lbs. Now, he is 30 lbs!

The story is a bit ironic on how we decided to get a pup. When I was a little girl, I would beg and beg my parents for a dog, but never won the argument, and grew up without pets. As I transitioned into adulthood, I developed a minor form of OCD towards cleaning, and I thought, I never want any pets! They are so messy!! For the past few months, Trevor had expressed interest about getting a dog and the more I thought about it, the more the idea sounded appealing. I debated back and forth about the possibility. Maybe we shouldn’t get one; this is a really busy time of my life! These thoughts consumed me. In the end, I decided to embrace the uncertainty of how the added responsibility would change my life, because I knew that I would figure it out. I felt that I really needed a change; a sense of renewed purpose. I was sick of focusing on myself so much.

And let me tell you guys. Although Shadow is a lot of work, he is the best thing that has EVER happened to us! Doesn’t his face just say it all?! I love him so much! And boy, is he ever SPOILED!!!!

I had good intentions of taking special family photos for when Shadow first came home, but life happened and I never got around to it. These low quality iPhone photos will have to do! I’ve also been meaning to post this about two months ago when we took him home, but things have just been crazy. Better late than never! I’ll eventually post an update on him with more family photos!

Prepare for your heart to melt!

How is he doing?

Really well!! Shadow has such a sweet personality, and is pretty mellow for a puppy. He loves running in the woods, and he ADORES the snow. Potty training was a little rough at first (mostly because Trevor and I are impatient people), but he’s finally getting the hang of it, and we have few accidents now. We tried the bell method to teach him, but he developed his own way of telling us. Shadow sits by the door with his head slightly cocked, gazing into our eyes. He locks eye contact with us and waits for us to take him out. It melts my heart! He’s pretty mouthy but that is to be expected for a puppy, and he’s getting better. He is the best snuggler and he’s already spent a few nights in our bed….what a spoiled pup!!

We took him to puppy beginner training classes at Pet Smart, and he has already learned so much. I am amazed at how smart golden retrievers are! Shadow already knows many basic commands, but he needs to work on listening with distractions. Going on a simple 10 minute walk usually takes 20 minutes because he just has to chase every leaf, stick, and pinecone! It’s the cutest thing, but something we definitely need to work on!

5 Life Lessons My Pup Taught Me

Bringing Shadow home has changed my life. I’d like to share with you five lessons I’ve learned so far throughout this experience!

1.) Cherish the little things

Since we took Shadow home, I’ve been forced to change my lifestyle to get outside more, and I’m so thankful for that! Just watching him frolic in the snow and discovering new things gives me the greatest joy. He’s taught me to cherish the little things, and that we don’t need a lot in life to be happy!

2.) Loyalty

I swear, Shadow’s little heart almost explodes with excitement when we walk through the door! He sprints to us and attacks our faces with kisses. BEST. FEELING. EVER. His unwavering loyalty astounds me.

3.) Patience

Oh man. Shadow’s cute, but he requires patience. There are days where he does great with potty training, and then we have days where he pees on the floor next to our legs. We know that he is just a puppy and that the training will come, but it requires patience, as do all things in life.

4.) I am now prepared to have a child- LOL 😉

This is slightly a joke, but actually…. not really. LOL! Shadow is a TON of work, and Trevor and I always joke that we are 100% prepared to have children now. Of course, when Shadow is a little older!

5.) Love without limits

Shadow just adores us and loves us unconditionally! He snuggles with us at night and is SO excited to see us in the morning when he wakes up. He loves with his whole heart and lives for one purpose only; to show affection!

    • Aw thank you babe! Yes, LOTS of patience. He is so worth it though :) xo

  • Ashley Stephenson

Oh my gosh I want him!!! Just yesterday I was trying to convince my husband to let me adopt a Goldendoodle puppy but our dog doesn’t get along great with other dogs so we don’t think we can :( How great is it to be a dog mom! I definitely spoil my baby!

    • We have a goldendoodle in our puppy class and he is just the sweetest!!

  • OMG, he is super cute! Love all the pics! And now I want a puppy, too!
    So happy for you! xxx

    • hehe I’m such a bad influence! 😉

  • He is just the cutest! I love Goldens, and I swear some of your photos he looks like a life-sized puppy doll he’s just too perfect!

Unfortunately Kris is allergic to animals so I will never have puppy joy :( Though I often tell him he has puppy like qualities so it works out!

    • LOL! that’s like…exactly how I feel, but you perfectly put it into words!

Aw man :( I’m sorry to hear that. <3 Maybe there is a breed that he is less allergic too that won't make his life miserable?

  • Golden Retrievers are the way to my heart. Don’t get me wrong, I love all dogs but goldens stole my heart 9 years ago when we got my son his sweet Bella. They’ve grown up together and she is truly the most patient, sweetest dog in the world. I’d have 15 of them if I could.

Don’t be surprised if he stays mouthy. Bella still is and always will be. We’ve affectionately nicknamed her the mouth of the south. She’s our Sweet Southern Bell(a).

Enjoy all the sweet puppy things Shadow does because it surely doesn’t last long at all.

    • Aw so sweet! I love the name Bella. I love Shadow’s little puppy breath! Wish he would stay a puppy forever!

  • Samantha

Oh my goodness! How cute! Congratulations!

  • He’s so adorable! I love the faces of him looking so guilty lol

Being a dog mom has basically trained to be a good mom. My parents always told me if I ever wanted to know what its like to have a kid, get a dog because you’re basically doing as much as you do when you have kids. Feed them, take them outside, take them to get checked, buy them stuff, give them unconditional love, raise them etc.. It’s a lot of work.

    • Haha that is one of my favorite pictures of him too!!

Dogs don’t have diapers…that’s my hugest challenge!!! lol.

  • OMG your pup is so cute! Having a dog is the best thing ever!

    • Thanks girl! We are so excited!

  • Shadow is adorable!! And I loved reading about the life lessons you’ve learned. Dogs can teach their humans so much! Your first point is one thing that I absolutely love about having a dog… I have to take breaks and go outside throughout the day because I need to take care of Mina. I can’t get so caught up in a book or work or Netflix that I spend all day on the couch. :)

    • Aw thank you love! Yes, he is definitely keeping me accountable for getting those steps in 😉

  • He is so, so cute! I have always loved Goldens but have never had one. Shadow is a very handsome fellow. Welcome to the crazy dog lady club!!!

    • aw thanks love! I love the club so far! haha

  • Aarika Chilson

Shadow is THE cutest! =) While growing up, we always had golden retrievers as family members. I sure do miss my dogs, and I LOVE the lessons you have shared about having fur babies in our lives. I absolutely agree that dogs teach us so many valuable lessons. Great post!

    • AW thank you!! Goldens are amazing. Sometimes I’m still in shock that we have him!

  • Greta Hollar

He is so cute! I’d sit and snuggle with him all day!

  • OMG he’s so adorable! :)

  • Awww that is the cutest puppy ever, that face tho – he sure melts ones heart! I see you are having a ton of fun being a dog-mama.

    • Thank you love! He is a heart breaker!

  • Oh my goodness…beyond adorable! I especially love the Minnesota dog tag! Go Gophers!
    Caitlin

    • Thank you, love! Yes…Trevor went to the U of M!

  • Neguine

He is such a cutie pie!!! No wonder it made you reconsider having a dog, I wouldn’t have doubted either. My family got a dog 6 years ago while I was still leaving at home and it’s true that you see things so differently as a grown up. I feel like you cherish them so much more and you learn from them a lot too! Love this post babe. Sending you so much love.

    • Aw how sweet! Yes, I am learning lots. Thank you so much, love! <3 <3 He is wonderful.

  • What a friggin’ CUTE. His face!!! I can imagine how the loyalty would be so awesome…my cats are loyal, but not quiiiiite on a golden retriver’s level. haha! 😉

    Coming Up Roses

    • hahaha oh man! I’m totally not a cat person, but now I get how people can fall so in love with pets!!

  • Oh my goodness, what a little cutie! I’m a cat person, of course, but I just can’t help but think about how fun a little puppy would be. I don’t think I could do the work, but GOSH THEY’RE CUTE!

    Molly // Miss Molly Moon

    • They are a LOT of work!! but he’s so worth it. Thanks love!

  • Jodi-Kay Edwards

I can’t believe he’s already 30lbs! My goodness my 6 year old husky is 48 lol. Aww so so cute, I love seeing all the puppy snaps! He just looks like the sweetest little thing! Haha I’m pretty impatient too when Cal and I move in together I know we were thinking of getting another husky pup. I felt the same way when we adopted Spirit, I get outside more and I love it. :)

    • aw!!! Trevor’s sister has a husky and he’s the sweetest boy ever!!! <3 Beautiful dogs!

  • Wife Sense

Shadow is adorable – and SO photogenic. My dog looks like a doofus in pictures. We have to take 10 to get 1 decent one. But he’s well-behaved, so there’s that.

    • LOL. Well, there is a science behind it…you have to hold a doggie treat next to the camera! LOL.
