Happy holidays, friends!
I hope you are all doing well! A month ago, I asked via my Twitter and Snapchat channels if you guys had any ideas for me to write about! Someone suggested I write about my personal holiday traditions, and I thought, how fun would that be!
Our family takes Christmas VERY seriously. Naturally, it’s my favorite holiday! There’s just something so magical about the twinkling lights, the excitement in little ones’ eyes, the dazzling decor, and of course, the season of giving & family.
My Family’s Christmas Traditions
I think one of the reasons why Christmas is so special to me is because for as long as I can remember, my parents have hosted Christmas at their home on Christmas Eve. I have a relatively small family, but I remember how excited I used to get when the house would fill up with my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. With everyone’s busy schedule, it can be so hard to get everyone in one stagnant place!
As a little girl, we use to go up to my grandpa’s cottage in Michigan and cut down a tree. Although we no longer do that anymore, I still enjoy cutting down a live tree and decorating it. I get this from my parents; my mom decorates the BEST Christmas trees that you will ever see in your lifetime. Guys, I wish I could convey to you how gorgeous her trees are. Each year she has a different theme; personally, her gold and brown tree last year was hard to beat! The ornaments are always shimmery, crystal-like, and eye-catching. I promise, you will never find a more elegant tree.
We are huge into decorating cookies as well. We dedicate a whole day to “cookie day” while frosting sugar cookies and rolling peanut butter balls to Niel Diamond’s Christmas tape. Since as long as I can remember, we’ve been frosting cookies to that good ol’ Niel Diamond tape. It’s definitely a signature component of my childhood!
On Christmas Eve, my mom and grandma get together and cook an amazing meal. I don’t want to brag or anything, but my mom is the best cook in the world. Just ask my fiancé, whenever she has us over for dinner, we always leave a good 5 lbs heavier, unable to move (or breathe!) On the menu for Christmas usually includes turkey or ham, cheesy potatoes, sweet potatoes, pasta salads of all kins, pies of all sorts, lots of homemade Christmas sugar cookies, seasoned pretzels, and more. You definitely will never go hungry in the Hetzel household! I just hope someday I can be even HALF as good as a cook as my mom and grandma are. My great grandma used to work at a bakery so I think it all started with her!
We head to midnight mass on Christmas Eve, and then Christmas morning, we open gifts at my parent’s. This is always a 3 hour long process because my mom insists we all open one gift at a time so she can see every single gift! 😉 I just love gift opening, because I love giving gifts to others. Christmas is the time of the year that I splurge, except this year because of wedding year, I had to cut back a little. I decided to get a little creative with the homemade gifts, you can follow along on Snapchat to see what those are. I’ll share on Christmas morning!
After opening gifts, my mom makes a huge brunch (did I mention we like to eat in this family?!) Although we are usually still stuffed from the night’s meal before, we manage to make room for french toast, bacon, porkie sausages, and an egg bake!
Now that I’m getting married, I realize that pretty soon Trev and I will be starting traditions on our own! I’m hoping to mesh the traditions that we’ve grown up in between both households. The Korpi side celebrates Christmas on Christmas night, with a big, fun party filled with family, friends, and laughter. I love Christmas because everyone is always in a good mood, there are always yummy drinks (the Christmas slush gets me every year!) and good company. As I’m writing this, I wish 12/25 would just hurry up already! I think it’s my favorite day of the year!
I am so excited to share the day with our friends and family. Trevor has been really sick with bronchitus the past week, but thankfully, his health has recently taken a turn for the better. I recently woke up with a scratchy cough so I’m just praying I didn’t get his sickness, and if I did, that it holds off until the holidays are over!
