We're on a mission to get a picture by each of the 50 state entrance signs!

Hey friends!

This post has been a long time in the works, and I’m really excited to share it with you all today!

For those who may be new readers, I’ll give a short intro about the mission my travel-loving fiancé and I are on. We have made it a goal to take a picture by each of the 50 state entrance signs. This is NOT as easy as it sounds! It requires lots of planning, searching, and mapping out.

If you haven’t already, get caught up with Part 1 of our 50 State Sign Challenge where I show you the first 19 signs we attained. Most of these were taken out on our road trip out west in 2014. You guessed it…it’s time to now hit up the EAST coast!

This past August, we planned our road trip out east. I’m proud to say that in this 6 day trip, we were able to knock off another 14 states off our list, putting our grand total to 33 so far! I have to give Trevor credit for how cool this all is. He’s the mastermind behind all of the planning, mapping, and driving!

Although Washington D.C. technically isn’t a state, we decided to throw’er in there. (This pic was at 4:30am. No judgement for the scuzziness! 😉 )

The West Virginia sign (as seen above) had a really interesting story behind it…so we originally had a plan to get a picture by the Pennsylvania/West Virginia state border. When we arrived at the West Virginia state line, you could tell that the sign was vandalized and boarded up. The sign was virtually nonexistent, and the only other closest West VA sign was overarching the highway. This caused us a slight panic attack. How the heck were we going to get a picture next to a sign that was overarching the highway?! We ended up parking on the side of the highway and running like fools down in the ditch to get a picture of us under the sign. Totally not dangerous or anything at all…. (Sorry Mom!!)

Our count now is at 34 signs including Washington DC. The last signs we need to get are California, Florida, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska and Hawaii. We plan on getting the southern states on a road trip this winter, and the northwestern states some time next year. As a road trip to Alaska, well, I have no clue when that’s going to happen….but I promise you that it WILL happen!!! Hawaii is another debacle. We aren’t sure if we can technically get a state sign entrance picture without having to fly-in Hawaii.

Xoxo,

  • ahh so much fun! I loved reading this and seeing your pictures! I wish I had thought to do this before all of our trips! Alaska and Hawaii do pose a bit more of a challenge, haha. I’m sure you guys will do it!! I didn’t know there would be so much planning involved! What a fun way to remember everywhere you’ve been!

    • It’s a blast. Like I mentioned, my fiance does it all. I’m so blessed to have him be the navigator! Lord knows I would struggle!

  • What a fun idea! I love this! weve done a few signs on a few trips but nothing quite so ambitious. Awesome!

I host a Photo Friday link-up each week – this would be a great post for it! We’d love to have you consider joining us!

  • I have been to most of these state signs :) This is my favorite state sign pic I have (too lazy to get out of the car but had to get the shot!) LOL.

    • LOL!!!! Oh my gosh, I LOVE THIS!!!!! We should have done that for our West Virginia sign!! lol

  • Paige Allison

I’ve been to 48 states (yup!) but mostly via air travel so there’s no opportunity to get a pic with a sign like this. What a cool project! You could turn it into something artsy and get it featured at an exhibit hall for sure.

I just noticed you’re in Northern WI – my parents own a resort in Webb Lake, which is really close to Siren! Small world :)

    • I would love to do that!!! Not quite sure how we will get Hawaii but definitely will get the lower 48. And how cool is that!!! It is such a small world! :)

  • Lindsay Katherine

hahaah I love your West Virginia sign and story! I love this challenge; I wish my husband and I had done something like this pre-baby, but now maybe it will be a future family challenge.

    • That would be awesome~ I have a feeling our trip to Alaska will have to be with a baby. lol

  • Becky @Disney in your Day

Wow, how cool is this! I guess since DC isn’t technically a state it doesn’t get a very high quality sign either, haha.

  • what a fun adventure to take together to get all these pictures :) I love following up with this escapade… I am really intrigued about how you’ll manage hawaii (honey moon and a boat rental maybe?)

  • Samantha

This is awesome! I hope I can do this one day ???? Great pictures!

  • Chantal Steele

This is so cool! Wanderlust– commence!

  • This is such a fun idea. How cool that you have all these now to remember your trips!

    • Yeah…it’s kind of like a scrapbook! I’d like to do something epic with it when we finish it. Maybe some kind of poster ? idk

  • These are all places I really want to visit!! Our state(Alabama) sign is a little boring to me

  • Leah Hall

    What a fun idea!

  • Ashley Lauckner

What a great way to remember all your adventures! Looking forward to seeing more.

  • Cindy @HometownQueenBee

I love this idea!! I always try to snap a pic when entering a state, but even better to actually stop and take a photo of yourself with it! I have a couple, when a welcome center rest stop has a sign, but others would be hard to get (I don’t want to pull over on a high way lol) so yeah, I see the planning this would take. Good job! 33 down…that is awesome!

    • Thank you so much, Cindy!! It’s a blast. Sometimes it’s a bit awkward…but we love it :)

  • This is such a fun idea! I want to go to all 50 states but getting a picture in front of each state sign is even more awesome! <3

    • Thank you so much!! We hope to eventually finish it within the next few years!

  • This is such a fun idea! I’d love to do something similar. I hope you head this way soon–I live in South Carolina. 😀 If you come into SC on either end of I-95, be careful as the traffic is always really bad since both NC and GA have three lanes of traffic and SC only has two. I don’t know what genius here decided to not add another lane!

    • Thanks so much for the heads up! We are excited to eventually get to SC!!

  • Wow, Washington DC should invest in a way better sign! haha!

Where did you guys go in VA?

    • Right!! We didn’t stop…we drove right out of Washington DC through the northern part of VA

  • What a great idea. Love it!

  • Shann Eva

That is so awesome! I love all the pictures, and that is just so cool that you’ve got so many already. I’m sure you guys will figure a way to get them all.

    • Hopefully…Alaska and Hawaii will be tough though!

  • So fun!!!! How many people slowed down to see what you were doing when you took all the pictures??lol. AK and HI…those will be great trips:)

    • It definitely was a bit awkward sometimes with all the cars going by!! lol

  • Love it! This has always been on my bucket list, but so far I’m at about 9 (10 if you count my state IL). Can’t wait to see you make the big 50!

    • That’s amazing though! Some people never get out of their own state .

  • what an awesome idea! Huge project to take on, love all your pictures

    • Thank you so much! It certainly is…and expensive! lol

  • Such a fun idea! We always think about it and end up completely forgetting as we’re about to drive by them. You’re right that it involves a lot of planning! I’m impressed 😉

    • Thanks, girl! Trevor deserves all the credit. I’m just the passenger! 😉

  • I love Virginias signs! I think it is so cool to get a picture next to each sign!

    • I know! It’s seriously the cutest!

  • That sounds like so much fun!! I would love to do this one day!!! And I am from Louisiana!

    • Aw how did I not know that?!

      • Not sure! Hahaha feel free to come down and visit anytime! We must meet up when you get to our state sign 😉

      • That would be amazing!!! 😀 😀 😀

  • Neely

This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen. Would make an awesome gallery wall

    • Thanks!! I’m planning to eventually :)
